Two days after the death of city resident Narbahadur Singh who fell from the elevated road point on Jagraon bridge — the ninth death at the same point — Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria along with MC officials visited the spot on Tuesday and assured the residents that safety nets would be installed and work would start on August 16.

However,MC Commissioner R K Verma was not present on the spot, and the mayor indirectly blamed him for the delay in the work. “Commissioner was sanctioned Rs 5 lakh for such works but there has been no result as of now,” he told Ludhiana Newsline.

Reportedly, the mayor was also angry at the pathetic condition of water pipes running through the area, making the road prone to accidents. “The pipes were blocked and I have told officials to get them cleared,” he said.

In a related development, various organisations, including Active Anti-Corruption Group,Action Against Corruption and Hindu Sikh Jagriti Sena,on Tuesday protested against the MC for not installing safety nets.

“Commissioner did not even bother to visit the spot. This shows how insensitive MC is,” said Parveen Dang from Hindu Sikh Jagriti Sena.
