After getting a green signal from the Election Commission of India on Thursday evening,the Excise department is all set to conduct the draw of lots for over 7,000 liquor vends in the state.
Ludhiana district alone counts for 270 sites.
In a departure from 2008,the license fee (paid in 12 equal monthly instalments) this year has seen a significant increase.
For sites falling under the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation limits,the fee has been increased from Rs 75 lakh to Rs 87 lakh while the number of liquor vends have been decreased from the existing 205 to 200. In Doraha,the fee has been hiked from Rs 60 lakh to Rs 67 lakh.
The application fee has been raised from Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000 as well. Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner,Ludhiana,Parampal Singh said: Earlier,applicants had to attach a draft amounting to 5 per cent of the total license fee. But now,Rs 1 lakh per liquor vend has to be deposited for filing applications for sites within the MC limits while in rural and semi-urban areas,this amount is Rs 50,000 per application. Finally,on the day of allotment,the allottee will have to deposit 5 per cent of the total license fee.
Also,beer has been classified into two categories light beer will be priced at Rs 25 while strong will be available at Rs 35. Earlier,all brands were sold for Rs 25.
Till now,a total of 600 applications have been received by the Excise department.
March 16 is the last date for filing applications while the draw of lots will be held on March 20.
