Khel Ratna awardee Ranjan Sodhi on Sunday urged schoolchildren to adopt a serious approach towards shooting as it held immense potential as a career.
Interacting with schoolchildren from 56 schools at the 14th Punjab Rifle Shooting Association (PRSA) Inter-school Competition which concluded at Govind National College,Narangwal,Sodhi said,Students need to be serious and focused towards shooting. As a career on an international level,shooting is an awesome sport and now with such competitions being held,there is going to be a pool of budding shooters who will need guidance and support.
He added that he was amazed to see such a huge prize money being distributed by the Punjab government as even in some national competitions,the prize money is lesser. Rs 10-lakh prize money was awarded to winners in 15 separate events.
PRSA president and Punjab Cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia,who also presided over the concluding function of the inter-school shooting championship,said the PRSA would now follow up with the hosting of the Punjab State Open Shooting Championship soon. Besides this,world-class shooting ranges would be established in Ludhiana,Amritsar,Mohali and Bathinda,and basic shooting ranges would simultaneously be set up at all district headquarters.
Majithia said A class jobs had been provided to shooters who had excelled in the sport and that the sport budget had been increased from Rs 12 crore to Rs 142 crore in 2013-14.
