Three unidentified persons snatched a .9mm pistol of head constable Narinder Singh after throwing red chilli powder into his eyes on Friday midnight.

The incident happened at 1.57 am near Pradhan Dhabha located at Aarti chowk when Narinder Singh with PCR number 37 was on duty. Narinder, who is currently admitted to DMCH,said while he was on duty, three persons in a white car came and asked the way to Jagraon and within a few minutes, they attacked him, threw red chilli powder into his eyes and snatched his official pistol.

Police Commissioner P S Gill said that they had taken video footage from CCTV cameras of the dhabha and were trying to find clues.

Heavy police force was deployed after the incident all across the city.

SHO Nirmal Singh said,“It seems that miscreants only wanted the revolver. Therefore, they entered into a brawl with the head constable who was doing his duty at midnight.”

Sources said the dhabha had a drinking place which remained open till midnight and the miscreants had come drunk before stepping into their white car. Police, however, maintained that the drinking place had been closed by that time.

However, the Police Commissioner said,“Before my joining I got to know that 24 PCR motorcycles had a policeman each. But now I have ordered that every PCR motorcycle will have two cops each and no cop will travel alone, especially during night duty.”
