Even when 168 cases of dengue have already been confirmed in the district, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation, which faces shortage of fogging machines, was ordered by the state government to send its machines to Muktsar district that has been hit by floods.

What is more, the machines which went there in perfectly working condition have returned dysfunctional. Now the Ludhiana MC is struggling to get them repaired while fogging has taken a hit in the city.

“We got a call from the CM office and they told us to send machines to Muktsar. We said we already had less number of machines but it was an order,” a highly placed source in Ludhiana MC told Newsline. “We sent six machines of 40-litre capacity which can work for one hour continuously and have been made in Germany. But out of the six, four have returned completely dysfunctional and now we have sent them for repair.”

In addition to six big machines, four small machines of 5-litre capacity which can work for 20-25 minutes were also sent and all of them had problematic functioning on return. However, the source said “they are now working after repair”.

As per a report of the health department, dengue larvae are still being found in many areas like Simlapuri,Railway Colony,Jamalpur,Dugri,Vishal Nagar,Sherpur and Giaspura.

District epidemiologist Dr Anurag Verma said,“We have told the Municipal Corporation to intensify fogging in areas from where maximum dengue cases are being confirmed. Now it is up to them to ensure that efforts do not remain on paper.”

Fogging running behind schedule Dr Verma said that as per rules, every part of the city should be fogged once a week at least in this season. However, the source from MC confirmed that fogging was running way behind schedule.“We have given 75 small machines to every councillor. But four of the big machines have returned dysfunctional from Muktsar. Till the time they are not repaired, the situation will be the same,” said the source.

“Now other than councillor’s machines, there are a total of 13 machines only which are working in proper condition,” the source added. “Is it possible to manage the whole city with 13 machines?”

When contacted,A S Sekhon,MC health department head, said,“We have intensified fogging and we are focussing on areas like Industrial Area where workers have high risk of catching dengue. Now fogging is being done two times a day in such areas.”

88 from other districts

Till now,285 patients of dengue are admitted to city hospitals. Out of them 168 are from Ludhiana while 88 are from other districts of Punjab. As many as 29 patients are from other states.
