Although the Moga police has lodged an FIR against two main accused — Gurcharan Singh alias Rinku and Sukhpal Singh alias Khushpinder — for attacking the Chandigarh Police party during a raid in Moga on Wednesday late, their arrest is yet to happen as the duo are hospitalised.

The duo have been put under handcuffs in the prisoner’s ward at Moga Civil Hospital. H S Pannu, SP(D), Moga, said, “We are yet to get the fitness certificate of both accused from the hospital authorities and then only will they be arrested. We are waiting for doctors to discharge them.”

Pannu added that “first Moga police will get custody of duo for interrogation in the encounter case and later Chandigarh Police will interrogate them for youth’s assault case”.

Dr Ravinder Gill, senior medical officer at Moga Civil Hospital, said that both patients would be discharged in a day or two. “Rinku is suffering from a minor fracture in left kneecap while Sukhpal alias Khushpinder is having a negligible sprain in an ankle. It is nothing major and we will discharge them in a day or two. They had no other injuries when brought to the hospital,” he said.

“These injuries are the result of falling down or defending oneself from someone and sprinting too fast,” he added.

The duo, who have been booked under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC for attacking the police party, claimed that “they did not attack the police or fire at them”. “All firing was done by other two (Sukhdev and Gora) at the time of shootout. We did not even know them. We want a fair and external inquiry in the case as we did not attack the police officials,” claimed the duo.

Denying the allegations leveled by the family of Sukhdev Singh who was killed in the encounter, SAD leader Gursewak Singh Gohlia claimed that he had “no connection” with the entire episode. “Sukhdev was my friend and I invited him to my family function around five months back. I agree that Inspector Ranjodh Singh (Chandigarh Police Crime Branch head on whose statement the FIR has been lodged) is my cousin but I have no role in the entire episode. The blame being put on me for planning the whole conspiracy against Sukhdev and Gora is baseless and inquiry will prove everything.”
