More than 170 textile units in the city are not covered under ESI as the owners fail to provide this facility to their staff. The textile mazdoor union gave a memorandum to the ESI assistant joint director highlighting this problem. Union convenor Rajwinder Singh said that earlier too they had listed 150 units where union members did not get ESI cover. But the authorities did not swing into action. Today a fresh list of 20 units was submitted.
Another union member,Vishvnath, stated that the authorities have assured that they would take some action in this direction in a week. Once employees are covered under ESI,they get free treatment at ESI and connected hospitals. Their families too get free treatment, giving them a sense of social security.
Biomedical waste site raided
A Pollution Control Board team, along with RTI activists, raided the ESI biomedical waste site. The activists had complained that treatment of waste is not being done properly. However, the pollution board team did not find much violations except for a shredder which was missing at one site. This shredder is used to destroy needles and syringes before treating them. This is a gross violation, said SE Karunesh Garg. I am yet to get a full report in this context and will take action as per rules, he assured.
