In a double tragedy for a family in Allahabad’s Katra locality, a youth first shot his sister dead and then hanged himself from the ceiling fan Tuesday morning, according to the police’s preliminary investigation into the case.
Twenty-two-year-old Sachin Sahu has left behind, besides a country-made firearm, a “suicide note” in which he has reportedly expressed dissatisfaction over his 17-year-old sister Poonam’s love affair with one Dhananjay Singh, a resident of Azamgarh, and which he wrote was the reason behind his act, the police informed.
The family has lodged an FIR against Dhananjay for abetment to suicide under Section 306 of the IPC.
Inspector (In-charge), Colonelganj, Rakesh Kumar Singh said efforts were on to trace Dhananjay.
Singh said Sachin, opposed to his sister’s relationship, had learned of her plan to elope from the house. He has written in the suicide note that he gave drug-laced cold drink to his mother and two other sisters the previous night and then shot Poonam in the head Tuesday morning, Singh said.
“She (Poonam) had taken out money from my pocket. Around 5 am, two persons had come to take her away. I again asked her not to go but she did not agree. What was I to do? I shot her. After some time, I realised that the police will come in the morning and arrest me and put me in jail. I did not want that to happen. Therefore, I am killing myself. Please forgive,” Sachin has purportedly written in the letter.
Circle Officer, Colonelganj, Samar Bahadur Singh said: “Dhananjay used to live in a lodge near the family’s house. He later changed the lodge but continued to remain in touch with Poonam.”
The Sahu family is engaged in tiffin business. After the death of Sachin’s father a few years ago, his wife took over the business and ran it with the help of her children.
