In order to strengthen the party organisation in the state,AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi has asked the Indian Youth Congress to form committees down to the booth level in Uttar Pradesh.

The fresh election procedure for the central zone will start from July 16 with the launch of a membership drive, and this time the election will take place till the booth level.

Sources, however, said,Rahul’s presence during the month-long membership drive is not confirmed. Last time,he had travelled to various parts of the state to popularise the drive.

A team of Youth Congress leaders arrived in Lucknow on Friday to start preparations for the drive. State returning officer Manoj Yadav said,“The election will take place for 26 Lok Sabha-level committees,131 Vidhan Sabha-level committees and 41,679 booth-level committees. The membership drive will end on August 13.”

Asked about Rahul,Yadav said it was not yet clear whether the AICC general secretary would tour the state like last time.

In the previous drive, committees were formed till the ward and panchayat level only, and membership stood at 3,25,000,which left just 2.66 lakh genuine members after scrutiny. By taking its committees till the booth level in the state, the Congress is aiming at increasing membership.

Also,in the committee of five members at the booth level, one seat will be reserved for women, one for OBC and minorities and one for SC/ST candidates.
