Claiming fear of a law and order problem, the police stopped BJP Lok Sabha member Yogi Adityanath in Gorakhpur Monday morning from going to Basti for addressing a rally.
The MP from Gorakhpur then staged a dharna along with his supporters on the Lucknow-Gorakhpur highway at Nausar. The blockade lasted more than four hours even as the police tried to dissaude the protesters.
Some of Yogis supporters were arrested in Sant Kabir Nagar when they tried to block a road in Khalilabad in protest against the administrations clampdown on Yogi.
Yogi said he was given permission for the rally three days ago but the administration did not allow him to go today for political reasons. He said the police first tried to stop him near his residence and later blocked his way at Nausar, near Gorakhpur city.
Gorakhpur Additional District Magistrate(City) Badri Nath Singh said the Basti district magistrate had ordered that the MP should not be allowed to address the rally in Basti as it could result in a law and order situation.
Yogi withdrew the dharna in the evening after the Gorakhpur DM and the SSP reportedly offered him an apology to him and his supporters were released.
The rally which was called by Hindu Yuva Vahini was held but I could not address it. We have decided to hold another rally in Basti on September 22, Yogi said.
