A 25-YEAR-OLD woman committed suicide by hanging herself after allegedly killing her seven-year-old nephew in City Kotwali area of Bhadohi district on Friday.
Police said the woman, Sarita, wanted the boy — whom she had adopted when the couple had no child — to return to his father, as she now had a child of her own.
The incident came to light when Subhash Pal, a resident of Maryad Patti, rushed to his house from the fair price shop where he is employed after getting a call from his wife Sarita. Subhash told police that Sarita told him over phone that she had killed Harshit Pal, a student of Class II, and was going to kill herself. Harshit is the son of Sarita’s brother.
By the time Subhash reached home, he found the main door bolted from inside. When he peeped through a window, he saw Harshit lying on the floor near a bucket of water and his wife’s body hanging from the ceiling fan. Police were subsequently informed. “The boy was strangled first. Then the woman forced his head inside the bucket to ensure his death. She then called her husband and hanged herself “ said Bhadohi Inspector Ajay Srivastava.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that Subhash and Sarita got married more than seven years ago. When they did not have any children, they adopted Harshit five years ago. A year ago, Sarita gave birth. Following this, she was putting pressure on her husband to return Harshit to his father. But Subhash was not in favour and cited the boy’s education,” he added.
