Police Monday seized Rs 29.73 lakh in cash comprising of the now demonetised Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 currency notes, from a woman and her brother in Lucknow’s Chowk police station area Monday night.

SHO Gyanendra Pratap Singh said the woman could not explain why she had such huge amount of cash in her possession and the police handed over the money to the Income Tax authorities for appropriate action. The woman and her brother too were handed over to the officials.

He said the woman was standing near Shia PG College along with her brother with a bag on Monday night when some locals informed the police that she was waiting to exchange her old currency notes with someone.

Singh said police seized the money after she failed to explain the purpose and source of such huge amount of cash with her. He said most of the money consisted of Rs 1,000 notes and only four notes were of Rs 500.

He said the woman identified herself as Shabina Naz, a resident of Aliganj area, and her brother as Naved Islam. ENS
