A Dalit woman,who took refuge at an ashram after her locality was filled with flood water,was allegedly raped by the head mahant Abhyanand in Adampur police station area of Varanasi early

Thursday.

A case of rape under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act has been registered against the mahant.

Station officer (SO) of Adampur police station Vinod Kumar Yadav said they have collected some evidence which confirm the rape. They are now waiting for the medical examination of the victim which has been conducted.

The mahant escaped after the crime and raids are being conducted at his hideouts in Bihar,he added.

Yadav said the 38-year-old woman,who belongs to Jaunpur district and was staying in a rented house in Ram Nagar area of Varanasi along with her son for the last two years following a marital dispute with her husband,had taken shelter at Yamuneshwar ashram in Adampur area five days ago. Several families belonging to the area were in the ashram after flood led to water-logging in the locality.

The SO said the woman reached the police station early this morning and lodged a complaint against the mahant. She alleged she was was asleep in a room of the ashram when Mahant Abhyanand (32) asked her to open the door around 12.30 pm on the pretext of an emergency.

The woman alleged that the mahant entered the room,gagged her and threatened to kill her if she raised an alarm. He then allegedly raped her and left the room. When she tried to seek help from other people in the ashram,nobody offered help.

The SO said the police have recovered some clothes as evidence.

Yadav said a police team has been sent to Aara district of Bihar in search of the mahant,as the main Yamuneshwar ashram is situated there.
