Western UP bench: Lawyers court arrest,strike to continue

Thousands of lawyers from the Allahabad High Court,the district court and other smaller courts in and around district Monday courted arrest,while protesting against the demand for setting up a separate western UP bench. The strike,meanwhile,will continue till Tuesday.

Honorary Secretary Allahabad High Court Bar Association (AHCBA),Prabha Shankar Mishra,said: “Lawyers from various courts joined the protests. They were taken into preventive custody and later released. The strike will continue on Tuesday.’’

Mishra said AHCBA president,K N Mishra,Monday met the CM. “He would return late tonight and brief the House Tuesday. Also,details of the meetings with Chief Justice (CJ) would also be put before the House. A final decision would be taken thereafter,’’ he said.

The lawyers have been maintaining that they will not return to work until they are assured by the CJ and the CM that there was no proposal to set up a separate UP bench.

While the Allahabad HC lawyers have been on strike since August 13,lawyers in western UP districts have also gone on strike in support of a separate bench.
