Weeks later,2 held for rape of physically challenged girl

Police have arrested two persons accused of raping a physically challenged girl,whose parents were asked by the panchayat to settle the matter by accepting Rs 21,000 from each of the accused in Allahabad.

Police have arrested two persons accused of raping a physically challenged girl,whose parents were asked by the panchayat to settle the matter by accepting Rs 21,000 from each of the accused in Allahabad.

The incident occurred on June 12 in Palain village under Nawabganj police station area on the Allahabad-Pratapgarh border.

No action has been been taken against the panchayat members,with the police saying their role was being probed. The police have been maintaining from the beginning that the parents of the victim were not interested in approaching the police and pursuing the matter legally.

The two accused,who were arrested on Thursday,are Santosh Kumar Patel,son of Shankarlal Patel,and Manoj Kumar Patel,son of Chhedi Lal Patel. Both are residents of Palain village.

Superintendent of Police (Trans-Yamuna),Shafiq Ahmed,said: “The accused have been arrested and the medical examination of the girl revealed rape. Their statements will be recorded. Also,we are waiting for the victim’s statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code to be recorded before the magistrate. We will proceed accordingly.”

Asked if any action was taken against the panchayat members for allegedly trying to settle the matter against cash payment,Ahmed said that investigations were still on. “It is true that the victim’s father was not interested in pursuing the matter legally. Action will be taken against the panchayat as and when their complicity becomes apparent,” said Ahmed.

On June 12,the physically challenged girl was allegedly raped by two persons. When the incident came to light,the father of the victim apparently approached the panchayat. The panchayat decided that the matter would be settled by the families of the accused persons paying cash to the girl’s family.

Girl ‘gangraped’ and murdered

ALLAHABAD: An 11-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped and murdered at a village under Nawabganj police station area of Pratapgarh district. Police have registered an FIR in which four persons,including a minor boy,have been named.

According to the police,the girl had gone missing late on Wednesday evening. She had gone looking for her mother in the nearby forest. Her father works in Delhi.

Police said her mother returned home from a different route,while the girl continued to search for her.

When she did not return till late,her mother and other village residents began looking for her. The nightlong search proved futile.

The girl’s body was discovered on Thursday morning in the forest area. The police said the assailants first raped the girl and then killed her. She was strangled with the drawstring of her pyjamas,the police said.
