Urdu Academy gets new vice-chairman

The state government appointed Dr Yaseen Ali Usmani as vice-chairman of the Urdu Academy on Friday.

Lucknow: The state government appointed Dr Yaseen Ali Usmani as vice-chairman of the Urdu Academy on Friday. Usmani hails from Badaun and is close to Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav. The appointment is for a period of one year.

Constable critically injured in group clash

Lucknow: A constable trying to intervene in a group clash was attacked by youths of one of the groups,causing him fractures in the forehead in City Kotwali area of Etawah district on Friday. While the accused are yet to be identified and are untraceable,Etawah SSP Modak Rajesh D Rao said that the constable had suffered injury during brick-batting.

Ten sugar mills to close operations

Muzaffarnagar: About ten sugar mills of two districts — Muzaffarnagar and Shamli — announced closure dates of the crushing season due to shortage of sugarcane here on Friday. District officer R B Ram said that dues of farmers amounting to more than Rs 600 crore are pending on sugar mills in the two districts. The authorities have taken steps to ensure full payment to the farmers,he added.
