The UP government late on Thursday appointed Z U Khan the new Principal Secretary,Law, and state Legal Remembrancer. Khan, who was earlier serving as District Judge,Agra, replaces K K Sharma.
The decision comes two days after Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Vourt cancelled the award of contract for high-security number plates to a private firm by the Mayawati government. The court had prima facie found a case of misfeasance in fixing of rates and involvement of office of Legal Remembrancer along with bureaucrats in the process.
Sources said the government had taken this step in view of the court order as K K Sharma was the Legal remembrancer when the entire procedure of allotment and fixing of rates took place.
The court had also imposed a cost of Rs 25 lakh on the government along with Rs 25 lakh on the private company that got the contract. As per the court order, the cost imposed on the state government has to be recovered from the officers, who are found guilty for award of such contract after an inquiry.
