Facing criticism over rise in crime and poor law and order in the state, the UP government on Friday removed DGP Ambrish Chandra Sharma and appointed Deo Raj Nagar in his place. A 1976-batch IPS officer,Nagar took over on Friday evening.
Sharma was posted in the Home Guards Headquarters as Commandant General.
Known as a non-controversial officer and close to SP president Mulayam Singh Yadav,Nagar was considered the front-runner for the post of DGP after the SP came to power last year. However,he was posted as head of the Police Promotion and Recruitment Board while Sharma became the DGP. He will retire in December this year.
Sharma was posted as DGP soon after Akhilesh Yadav took over as chief minister on March 15 last year.
Over 10 incidents of communal riots had taken place across the state last year. Several incidents of attack on policemen also occurred in many districts.
