Senior BJP leader Uma Bharti took oath as member of the Legislative Assembly from Charkhari on Thursday. It was her first visit to Lucknow after the Assembly elections.

Talking to the media later, she took moral responsibility for the party’s defeat though the BJP had not contested the elections in her leadership, nor was she projected as the party’s chief ministerial candidate.

Uma refused to comment on the reasons for the party’s defeat and the issue of former BSP minister Babu Singh Kushwaha’s induction ahead of the elections.

She accused the Samajwadi Party government of indulging in “appeasement of Muslims” by announcing incentives for Muslim girls and construction of boundary walls around the graveyards. Uma also alleged that the law and order had deteriorated in the state since the SP assumed power.

She did not visit the BJP’s state headquarters located right opposite the Vidhan Sabha building. After taking oath, she visited the RSS office at Keshav Bhavan and then left for Jhansi.

“Umaji had to attend a wedding in Jhansi, and since she was running short of time, she skipped the visit to party headquarters,” said a party leader. On Friday, she is organising a seminar to get suggestions for development of Charkhari.
