Swami Gyan Swaroop Sanand will participate in a meeting of the National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA),which will be chaired by the Prime Minister,on Tuesday. The swami will attend the meeting even as he continues his fast-unto-death.
So far,Swami Sanand had maintained that he would not participate in the meeting because the central government had not fulfilled its promise of stopping work on at least four hydro-electric projects in Uttarakhand coming up on the Ganga and its tributaries.
The swami has been demanding stoppage of work on all 11 hydel projects in Uttarakhand on the ground that it would damage the ecosystem of the river and affect its flow. He had resumed his fast-unto-death on April 10,after breaking it on March 23 following the Centres assurance.
A spokesperson for Ganga Seva Abhiyan, which is coordinating the agitation, said on Monday that Swami Sanand, who is in Delhi and was admitted to AIIMS twice, has decided to attend the meeting following directions from Shankaracharya of Jyotish and Dwarka Sharda Peeth,Swami Swarupanand Saraswati,of whom he is a disciple. Other saints and various organisations too had requested him to attend the meeting. Swamiji will take part in the meeting while continuing with the fast-unto-death and in police custody, said the spokesperson.
Earlier, after taking water in Varanasi on April 10,Swami Sanand had moved to an undisclosed location for a day. The next day he went to Delhi.
