Sonbhadra district administration has cancelled the stone mining lease of Anjana Dubey, the wife of Samajwadi Party MLA Ramesh Chandra Dubey. The MLA was named in Lokayukta N K Mehrotra’s report on siphoning of funds in the purchase and supply of pink sandstone for the construction of various memorials and parks in Lucknow and Noida during the previous BSP government.

Anjana Dubey owned a lease of 6.20 acre area at Sukrut village in Sonbhadra.

Her husband denied the charges. “Not a single piece of stone was supplied from the Sonbhadra mine. For the past five years,it has been a loss-making venture for me,” he said.

Over the cancellation of his wife’s lease,Dubey said the district administration informed him that the cancellation was done on the instruction of the Mining Department.

Dubey was earlier in the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and had lost the 2007 Assembly elections from Chunar. He was engaged in large-scale supply of stone for construction of various memorials and parks in Lucknow and Noida during the BSP regime. Later,he switched loyalties and contested on SP ticket from Ghorawal assembly seat and won the election.

According to a mining department report, which quotes the Lokayukta,Dubey manipulated the origin of sandstone. thus: He used sandstone from his mines and after getting it polished locally, supplied it,faking it as Rajasthan’s pink sandstone; the rate of sandstone was hiked from Rs 840 per cubic feet to Rs 1,890 per cubic feet.

The district administration conducted a probe and reportedly found the charges against Dubey to be true.

District Magistrate

Chandrakant then cancelled the mining lease of Anjana Dubey. “During investigation, the charges were found correct and hence,Anjana Dubey’s mining lease has been cancelled,” said R K Sangam,District Mining

Officer.

“We have taken the action after getting the Lokayukta’s report. Mining lease of another 20 people are being probed,” Sangam stated.

Lokayukta Mehrotra,in his report submitted to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on May 20,had reportedly

recommended inquiry against former BSP MLA Anil Maurya,BSP leader Sharda Prasad Maurya,Ramesh Chandra Dubey, and several others for getting undue benefits in the supply of pink sandstone.

Meanwhile, the adjoining Mirzapur district is also witnessing the same story. Here lease belonging to relatives of former Anil Maurya,Sharda Prasad and relatives of Ramesh Chandra Dubey are being examined. Sources said 20 mines of relatives of

politicians in Sonbhadra and 10 mines in Mirzapur are under the scanner.
