On a day the ruling Samajwadi Party faced flak from its Muslim legislators who demanded security for the minority community,a party MP came down on the state government for not granting their dues to deserving sportspersons.

Party’s Kaiserganj MP, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh said that the central government discusses issues with the sports federations, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) also does the same but “Uttar Pradesh (sports department) has still not found time for such meetings. Such sports department should be dissolved.”

Speaking at the launch of a monthly sports magazine — Sports Welfare started by former Ranji player Mohsin Raza — Singh, who is also the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI),said that the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister keeps visiting the sports grounds and the Haryana government too encourages its players,“but in UP things are different”.

“Kis-se mann ki baat kahun?… The players from Uttar Pradesh who participated in the Olympics were not given any rewards even though getting selected for the international sporting extravaganza in itself is a big thing,” Singh said, before adding that he will not speak “anymore or else people will think that I am planning to leave the party.”

He hoped that the “thekedar” (contractors) of sports in UP will awake from their deep slumber.

Interestingly,he skirted giving a direct answer when asked about the suspension of deputy director sports (UP) RP Singh ,saying,“I do not know about the charges… If he is found guilty in the inquiry, action will be taken against him,” he said.
