Top VHP leaders Ashok Singhal,Praveen Togadia and Ram Vilas Vedanti were released a day after they were arrested in a massive crackdown by the UP government to foil its 84-kosi parikrama.

The development came after the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court earlier in the day ordered the release of VHP leaders if they have been detained on apprehension of breach of peace for more than 24 hours in violation of Section 151(2) of the CrPC.

The government also ordered release of former BJP MLA from Ayodhya Lallu Singh.

Home Department spokesperson said Togadia,Vedanti and Lallu Singh were released late evening on personal bonds and assurance of good behaviour. The three were moved to Etah jail from Faizabad in the afternoon

Secretary (Home) Sarvesh Mishra said Singhal was allowed to go after he told Lucknow district magistrate that he wanted to go to Delhi. He left for Delhi in the evening,Mishra said.

Inspector General Law and Order R K Vishwakarma said 958 people, arrested yesterday and lodged in different jails, had been released after they furnished personal bonds.

While 2,200 VHP workers and seers were arrested yesterday,2,601 arrests were made till 9 pm today, said a spokesperson at the DGP Headquarters. Among these,1,042 were released on personal bonds while 1,559 are lodged in various jails.

Former BJP MP from Sant Kabir Nagar Indrajeet Mishra was arrested along with his supporters this evening while they were heading towards Ayodhya. Mishra and others have been sent to Gorakhpur jail.

Vishwakarma said the agitation by VHP workers in some districts was peaceful and no untoward incident was reported.

The districts where these agitations were held included Kanpur City and Dehat,Auraiya,Jhansi,Aligarh,Kasganj,Barabanki,Ghazipur,Bulandshahr and Lucknow.

About 50 VHP and Bajrang Dal workers who were staging a demonstration in Bulandshahr were taken in custody and released on personal bond later.
