Two persons, one of them an advocate, were injured in a shootout witnessed outside Kanpur District Court late on Wednesday afternoon.

The injured,Advocate Prashant Bajpai and Umesh Chandra — a photocopy shop owner — were allegedly shot by Prashant’s maternal uncle Harsh Bajpai. They were then taken to Ursula Horsman Memorial Hospital where the doctors later said they were in a stable condition.

Soon after the incident, security of the entire area was tightened and policemen from three police stations were sent to the court. Superintendent of Police (Kanpur East) Dharamveer Singh said: “The shootout was an outcome of a land dispute between Prashant and Harsh.” According to a police officer, for the last few years,Prashant and Harsh had been at loggerheads over a plot of land in the Chaubeypur area. “Though we have yet not received any complaint from Prashant or his family members,he has accused Harsh of firing bullets at him,” added Singh.

The police officer further stated that the family members of Prashant are likely to lodge their complaint by late night. Prashant told mediapersons that he spotted Harsh along with a few of his friends standing outside the Kanpur District Court gate.

“On several occasions in the past he has threatened that he would kill me,but I had never expected that he shoot me,” said Prashant. According to Prashant, the first bullet pierced his right hand but he was successful in avoiding the second. “The second bullet hit Umesh Chandra,” he added.
