An FIR was lodged against suspended Hasanganj station house officer Javed Khan,sub-inspector Shivakant Tripathi and other unnamed staff of the police station on Thursday for murder and wrongful confinement after a man died inside the lock-up on Wednesday night.

Police lodged the FIR on the complaint of victim Virendra Mishra’s brother Jitendra. The police claimed that Mishra,a resident of Mayanagar locality, had been arrested for possessing an illegal knife on Wednesday evening and was lodged in the police station’s lock-up. Around 9.30 pm,the police station’s guard Muneshwar Bakhsh saw that Mishra had hanged himself inside the lock-up with a blanket that had been given to him,the police said. He was rushed to the trauma centre of King George Medical University where he was declared brought dead.

However, the family members of the deceased claimed that Mishra had been detained by the police on Tuesday itself and tortured in custody. His brother Jitendra alleged that the SHO and the S-I who is in-charge of Madehganj police outpost had murdered his brother after hatching a conspiracy.

After the post-mortem was conducted, the family members held a demonstration at IT chauraha by placing the body on the road. They demanded Rs 25 lakh as financial assistance,a job to the deceased youth’s brother and immediate arrest of the policemen who arrested Mishra.
