A Shia cleric has alleged to have received a call threatening him with life and damaging the madrasa he runs in VIP Colony area under Kareli police station The call allegedly came Sunday night and the FIR in this regard was registered Monday at Kareli police station area of the city.
While the police are trying to trace the call, they claimed it appeared to be an act by a mischief monger as of now.
This is the second such call made to a Shia cleric in the past one month. However, the police maintained there was yet no evidence to suggest a connection between the two incidents.
According to the police, Maulana Kalbe Abbas gave a written complaint about the call on Monday. “An FIR under Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered on the basis of his complaint. Efforts are on to trace the person who made the call,” said Inspector (in-charge), Kareli, R D Yadav. The complainant has not named anybody in his FIR, he added.
There were also reports that Maulana Abbas had received a letter by post with similar threats nearly a month ago. The Maulana had reportedly not informed the police then.
Circle Officer (Kotwali) Radhey Shyam Rai said: “The complainant has told us that the caller threatened him with life and causing damage to the madrasa. The phone number has been put on surveillance. As of now, it appears to be the handiwork of some mischief maker.”
About a month ago, another Shia cleric, the Imam-e-Juma Jama Masjid, Maulana Syed Hasan Raza Zaidi, had received a similar threat. An FIR was lodged but the identity of the caller could not be confirmed. “The caller claimed he was Imran but could not be identified. I had lodged a complaint,” said Maulana Zaidi.
