Congress president Sonia Gandhi kicked off her election campaign in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, slamming all the rival parties and calling the period of non-Congress governments in the state a “phase of destruction”.

She accused the Mayawati government of playing a trick on the people by removing 21 ministers days ahead of the polls. “The present chief minister dismissed 21 of her ministers on election eve. She was not able to see their corruption in the past five years,” Sonia said.

Calling the resignations a “joke”,she asked if it would help clean the image of the state government. “Has the government become clean after resignation of these ministers?” She added that “such drama” is meant to cheat the people, and that true people never change their colour.

She hit out at the SP,BSP and BJP,saying the rival parties were only after power. Reminding the gathering about the coalition government formed by the BSP-BJP in the past, she said the two parties had entered into an agreement to run the government for six months on rotational basis. It only reflected that both lacked patience in order to take over power, she added. Then she also reminded the gathering about the government formed by the SP-BSP alliance.

She claimed that it was only the Congress, which never compromised with forces which create division in society. Highlighting the problems in the state,Sonia said the common people were helpless and their “respect” and “security” was under threat. “Youth do not see their future in absence of employment opportunities and farmers face threat to their agriculture land from the rich persons,” she added. She said farmers fear that their land would be captured by rich persons. “Kamjor ki fariyad nahin suni jati (complaints of the weak are not beinfgheard),” she told the gathering.

In the last part of her speech,Sonia highlighted the UPA government’s various pro-people schemes like MNREGA,mid-day meal scheme,NRHM,Right To Education and Food Security.

Beni shouted down again

Union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma, who represents Gonda in the Lok Sabha, was again shouted down at Sonia Gandhi’s rally on Wednesday. Verma was greeted with hoots as he got up to welcome Sonia in his own constituency. As state Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi invited Verma, who was sitting by Sonia’s side,to deliver his welcome speech, the crowd started shouting,“No,No,No”. Although Verma tried to pacify them, the crowd refused to hear him. Sensing the mood,he concluded his speech in two minutes.

This was the second protest against Verma in his constituency in presence of his party’s top leaders.

Earlier, the crowd had refused to hear him at Rahul Gandhi’s meeting in Utrauala. Projected as the Congress’s OBC face in Uttar Pradesh, several candidates in this region have been selected by the Congress this time on the Union minister’s recommendations.
