Election Commission (EC) has issued a notice for the proposed changes in the reservation status of Lok Sabha constituencies Mirzapur and Sonbhadra’s Robertsganj.

Mirzapur is currently an unreserved parliamentary constituency and EC has proposed to reserve it for Scheduled Castes (SC). Robertsganj Lok Sabha seat is currently reserved for SC and the commission has proposed to de-reserve it. At present, there are 17 reserved Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, but after the proposed change, theirnumber will remain same.

Meanwhile, the number of reserved Assembly constituencies in UP will get changed as the EC has proposed changes in the reservation status of eight constituencies.

For the first time in Uttar Pradesh,Scheduled Tribes (STs) are now going to get representation in the UP Assembly as it has proposed to reserve two seats under ST category. These two seats include Obra and Duddhi in Sonbhadra district. While Obra is currently unreserved,Duddhi was earlier reserved for SC.

Other unreserved Assembly seats that are going to be reserved for SCs include Saharanpur,Barhaj and Ghorawal.

On the other hand,Mehrauni,Salempur and Saidpur Assembly seats, which are currently reserved for SCs,are proposed to be de-reserved.

Number of reserved constituencies in UP are 85 and the figure will go down to 84 after the change.

According to a notice issued by EC secretary Sumit Mukherjee, any objections and suggestions to the proposed changes in the reservation status of these constituencies must be sent to him by December 16.

These objections and suggestions will be considered by the Commission in public sittings that will be held in Varanasi on December 26 for Deoria,Sonbhadra,Mirzapur and Chandauli districts. Next public sitting for constituencies in districts of Lalitpur,Kanpur Dehat and Jhansi will be held on December 28 in Jhansi, while the third sitting will be in Saharanpur on December 30.

An EC official said these changes in reservation status of Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies are proposed following the change in the population of SCs and STs in UP in the recent census.
