Union Minister Smriti Irani on Thursday said she had “reduced” the victory margin of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi by 80 per cent in Amethi because the Nehru-Gandhi family had not fulfilled its promises.

“The work, which Congress could not do in the past 60 years, the Modi government has done only in two years. You workers should be prepared for 2017 (UP Assembly) polls,” she told mediapersons while inaugurating a rest house at a bus station in Salon, which falls in Amethi Lok Sabha constituency represented by Rahul.

“The Nehru-Gandhi family has not fulfilled its promises, due to which, I have reduced Rahul Gandhi’s victory margin by 80 per cent,” Irani, who had contested against Rahul in the 2014 Lok Sabha election, said. “How will politics of family help Amethi?” she asked, claiming that Congress workers were “dissatisfied”.

During her day-long tour of Amethi, Irani alleged that when it came to developmental works, Congress has not been able to achieve in 60 years what NDA government has done in Amethi in the last two years. She said whenever she visits the district, people stop her car to give her letters and applications related to their problems. “People here have not been able to knock on the doors of the Congress family in 60 years,” Irani said.

She added that the people of Amethi address her as ‘didi’ with affection. “People call one leader as behanji (BSP chief Mayawati) who had failed to meet their expectations… Unlike her, I will meet their expectations,” said Irani.

Asked whether she would be BJP’s chief ministerial candidate for 2017 UP polls, Irani said: “I am a disciplined party worker and will follow whatever order is given.” On contesting again from Amethi Lok Sabha constituency, her refrain was the same.

Party district vice-president Govind Singh Chauhan said Irani has asked the local leaders to identify women who are eligible for free LPG connection under Pradhan Mantri Ujjawala Yojana and were left out in the initial survey.

Speaking at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Information Technology in Tikarmafi, the HRD minister said the institute will become the satellite campus of Lucknow’s Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU). It will teach BA, BCom, LLM and vocational courses, classes for which will start from August 1.

While addressing a gathering on a school campus in Dhammaur, Irani distributed tricycles and appliances to 1,100 differently abled persons. A three-day medical check up camp was held there. She also announced to provide at least one hand pump in each booth area of Amethi, which has 1,647 polling booths.
