Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday tore a paper and threw it from the dais to drive home the point that the Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh’s “promises on a list of paper” will do no good to the state.

While addressing his first public meeting in Lucknow,he said “Mulayam comes with a list of assurances to you and says he will give you water, electricity, employment and if not employment, then unemployment allowances”.

The state does not run with the list (of promises),it runs with your blood and sweat,he said after tearing the paper. “If you want to listen to promises and speeches, then go to the rallies of the leaders of the BSP,SP and the BJP. But come with us if you want to change UP,” he said while underlining that he had not come to UP to offer assurances.

Rahul said the Congress was not contesting the polls for the sake of seats or forming the government but for the future of people and youth.

In a speech that lasted barely10 minutes,Rahul also criticised Chief Minister Mayawati, saying that if she never visited people’s homes and villages in the last five years, how would she know about their problems. He also took a swipe against the BJP,saying “the party had invented ‘India Shining’ slogan after listening to dialogues on television while ignoring the reality of the country”. “The senior BJP leader (L K Advani) led a yatra against corruption but did not see any corruption in inducting Kushwaha and hugging other tainted BSP ministers.”
