A day after two Congress activists were suspended for seeking Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s candidature from Phoolpur constituency, the duo Thursday began fast-unto-death in front of Anand Bhavan in support of their demand.

Shreesh Chandra Dubey and Haseeb Ahmad had put up a hoarding in the Civil Lines area saying that Priyanka must campaign from Phoolpur,a constituency once represented by late prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, since Congress president Sonia Gandhi was unwell and Rahul Gandhi was busy,City Congress chief Abhay Awasthi said: “The panel has decided to suspend them with immediate effect. A report about the incident and the action taken was sent to the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee’s disciplinary committee. The panel will take a call on whether the two needed to be dismissed.”

State Congress spokesperson Dwijendra Tripathi Thursday confirmed that Haseeb Ahmed and Shrish Chandra Dubey are no more party members.

Meanwhile,Awasthi added: “The city committee took cognizance of the reports and the pictures appearing across media. The legal opinion about lodging an FIR for the act is yet to be received.”

The two activists, however, remained defiant. Dubey claimed there was nothing wrong in demanding Priyanka to contest from Phoolpur. “The hoarding does not express our feelings,” he said, adding the idea had come from the committee. Last Sunday, the City Congress Committee had proposed Priyanka’s name for the Phoolpur seat at a meeting with UPCC observer Anil Singh.
