A senior Provincial Civil Services (PCS) officer reportedly committed suicide by consuming poisonous substance at his official residence in Hazratganj police station area on Saturday.

The deceased,Vinod Kumar Rai,was posted as Additional District Magistrate (West) in Lucknow. Though the reason behind Rai taking the extreme step is yet not clear,it is suspected that he was depressed over some family problem.

The incident took place at Rai’s residence in Butler Palace colony around 1 am when Rai woke up his servant Suresh and told him that he had consumed four tablets of sulphas.

Suresh later called neighbours who then informed Lucknow DM Anurag Yadav. Rai was taken to Civil Hospital and subsequently from there to the trauma centre of Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University. He died at the trauma centre during treatment. As per the post- mortem examination report, the death occurred because of consumption of poisonous substance. Suresh said he had noticed nothing unusual in Rai’s behaviour and he went to sleep as usual around 11.30 pm on Friday.

According to family members,Rai’s wife Neelam had gone to his father’s place in Deoria two days back, and his son Utkarsh was in Noida where he worked at a private firm. Utkarsh and Neelam arrived in Lucknow in the day following the incident.

Lucknow DIG Ashutosh Pandey said no suicide note was recovered. Pandey said the family members have not given any reason for Rai’s extreme step.

A native of Mau,Rai was a PCS officer of the 1989 batch. Last month,he was posted as Lucknow ADM (West). Before that,he was posted as Joint Director of State Urban Development Agency,Lucknow.
