Union Road, Transport and Highways Minister, Oscar Fernandes, Saturday inspected roads in Amethi and Rae Bareli and asked officials to complete all the pending repair work in a week and take action against guilty contractors. The minister had arrived with a team of officials and met NHAI and UPPWD officials.
According to sources, during the review meeting, officials told the minister that some of the roads in the two constituencies have deteriorated due to overloading of heavy vehicles. Since the contract of most of these roads were awarded by the PWD, the minister asked concerned officials to forfeit the deposit of those contractors, whose roads have deteriorated within the Defect Liability Period or ask them to repair these roads with their own funds.
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, during his visit to Amethi January 23, had summoned senior officials questioning the poor condition of roads. He had promised that Union Minister for Road, Transport and Highways would personally inspect the roads and take necessary action.
“The roads will be repaired on time. We would take action wherever required and NHAI would also use their funds to repair some of the roads,” a senior PWD official said, who was part of the review meeting Saturday.
