Hukum Singh, one of the four BJP MLAs booked in an FIR for making provocative speeches in Saturdays Jat mahapanchayat, said Tuesday he did not use one provocative word in his two-minute speech while the other three did not speak at all.
I had decided even as I was leaving home to be careful about the speech, said Singh, the partys leader in the UP assembly. I did not name any religion or caste. I only said the state government has failed to maintain law and order… If recordings show me saying anything provocative or objectionable,I will quit politics, he said.
Singh, seven times the MLA from Kairana in Muzaffarnagar, said he had not planned to attend the mahapanchayat until Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait invited him Friday. I decided to participate on Saturday after reading the statements of senior police officers in newspapers that the police would not stop anyone from attending. Police and administration teams did not stop him on the way though he claims they were deployed at 20-odd places. If police had objected,I would not have gone, said Singh.
The other three BJP MLAs Sangeet Singh Som,Suresh Rana and Kunvar Bhartendra Singh could not be contacted, having switched off their phones.
The BKUs national vice-president Rajesh Singh Chauhan too said neither of the Tikaits had said anything provocative. He added that leaders of BJP,Congress and RLD who attended had gone of their own, with neither khaps nor BKU having invited them.
