Elaborating the Union Finance ministry’s agenda,Union Minister of State for Finance J D Sheelam Saturday said the ministry aims to bring more people under the tax net and charge little rather than burdening a few with a lot.

Sheelam said: “The Ministry is emphasising on simplification of tax rules and create a favourable atmosphere for voluntary filing of tax.”

“We also aim at increasing the tax base rather than increasing tax rates. Out of 120 crore people in India, only 3.5 crore pay taxes. The UPA government has taken a Rights based approach, such as Right to Education and Right to Food, which requires funds,” he said.

“The fourth emphasis is on tax compliance and we are trying to change behaviour of tax officers.”

During his visit, the minister inaugurated a building of the Income Tax department here and held review meetings with the IT and Customs and Excise department officials.
