The CBI has filed a closure report in a case of abetment of suicide of law student Sahil Zaidi, son of a former Allahabad High Court judge, whose body was found on a railway track in Lucknow on November 29,2011.
Sahils father Barkat Ali Zaidi is president of the Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.
The agency, which probed the case on the direction of the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court, concluded that Sahil had committed suicide with none abetting it.
In the report, the agency said the death of Sahil was witnessed by a seven-year-old boy,Yasin. Yasin said he saw Sahil walking alone near the railway track with a cellphone in hand. Then he suddenly thrust himself under the third last wagon.
The agency stated that on checking Sahils cellphone, they found a message which was sent to his friend Ankit Prakash on November 29,2011 at 13.45. The message read: Bhai, please collect my body from railway track behind my house in 15 mins. There is a red box in my room, please hand it over to Neha and convey my message that I really loved her and please tell her that I am dead.
The police searched the rented room of Sahil at Jalvayu Vihar and recovered the red box and documents. They claimed Sahil depressed.
The CBI filed the closure report in a local court in Lucknow which summoned for documents from the agency on Friday and fixed July 9 as the next date of hearing.
The report stated that the Lucknow police officers insisted on a postmortem of the body but the victims father requested the police to hand over the body without doing so as he was satisfied it was a case of suicide. No case was registered and the police only made an entry in the general diary.
However,a few days later,Sahils family learnt that there were circumstances to show that his death was homicidal. They sent a letter to the Lucknow police, demanding registration of FIR and a probe.
The Lucknow police, which initially treated it as a case of suicide involving a love triangle, registered a case of abetment of suicide against unidentified persons.
On December 26,2011,Sahils body was exhumed and postmortem was conducted in Madhya Pradesh. The panel opined that ante-mortem decapitation caused death.
Later,Sahils mother Nishad Sultana Zaidi moved the HC praying for investigation by an impartial agency.
