Eminent mathematician Prof S B Nimse took charge as Vice-Chancellor of Lucknow University from outgoing V-C G Patnaik in a ceremony on Monday.

On Day One,the new V-C promised a host of things to the university officials and students, saying he will try to give the campus a “makeover”.

Distinguishing between short and long-term goals,he said: “The LU has had a glorious past; but unfortunately,in the last few years, its performance has been declining. It has not been able to attract the best faculty nor the best students. Hence,my priority is accreditation by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) within three months. Then,we will also introduce UGC’s Faculty Recharge Programme and fill up vacant faculty positions as soon as possible. Also,as good students are giving the university a miss,we will also introduce Choice Based Credit System for all postgraduate students and value-added courses for all degree courses, which will improve job opportunities for students.”

He also said the university will take up renovation of various buildings in the campus, especially hostels, during summer vacations.

After taking a round of the campus,Nimse said he would also try to establish about 3-4 places in the university where the non-teaching staff can ‘hang out’ as they had “formed hamlets in and around the departments”.

Also in his ‘list of goals’ are: To convert good colleges into autonomous colleges; to improve the quality of teaching and research; introduction of group review system for syllabi, teaching and research, among others.

Appointed for a period of three years by Governor B L Joshi,Nimse said his term would be divided into three phases: preparation for upgrading the university systems; phase of implementation and the phase of consolidation.
