National veterans athletics championship from today

From athletes in their mid 30s to those in their 80s are expected are going to be seen in action in the National veterans athletics championship to be held at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium,Lucknow from February 12 to 14.

From athletes in their mid 30s to those in their 80s are expected are going to be seen in action in the National veterans athletics championship to be held at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium,Lucknow from February 12 to 14.

The meet is being organised by the UP Veterans Athletic Asso-ciation.

MR Rangnatha,chairman Veterans Athletics Federation of India (VAFI) informed that over 2,500 athletes will be seen in action during the three-day meet. “The Indian team for the international championships will be selected on the basis of the performance in this championship,” he informed.

Some of the very senior players expected to take part in the championship include R Goda (78 years),Rangappa (78 years) and DN Sampath (84 years). The senior most player who will be taking part in the championship is 89-year-old Shankar Nata Singh of Maharashtra. He will be participating in the 1500m,5000m and the 1000m race.

In the last edition of the championship,Maharashtra was the winner while Haryana was the runners-up.

The meet will be inaugurate by culture minister (UP) Subhash Pandey at 10.00 am on Thursday.
