A provisions store owner, who was also the brother of a village pradhan, was shot dead by four assailants in Kasimabad area of Ghazipur on Sunday night. Locals caught one of the assailants and lynched him to death.
The residents also burned bikes left behind by the assailants and, later, blocked the main road demanding justice. The blockade was removed early in the morning.
Police have registered a murder case in connection with the shop owners death. No case has been registered in connection with the lynching.
According to the police,Akhilesh Jaiswal (35),a resident of Sanehu village where his brother Manish Jaiswal was the gram pradhan, owned a provisions store at Salamatpur Chatti (small road side market) near the village.
A couple of days ago,Akhilesh got embroiled in a quarrel with one Manoj and Vishal over payment for some minor items. The police were reportedly informed but they said no formal complaint was lodged.
On Sunday, around 8 pm,four men on two motorcycles reached Salamatpur Chatti and barged into Akhileshs shop. They went inside, pulled him out and fired three gunshots from close range at him. As Akhilesh collapsed on the ground, the assailants tried to escape. However, one of the riders lost balance and his bike keeled over.
Hearing the gunshots, people rushed to the spot. They caught the assailant who had fallen down, and beat him up badly, after which he died. The other assailants escaped, leaving behind the other bike too, said Ghazipur SP Dr Umesh Chandra Srivastava. The mob then set afire the two bikes and later blocked the main road.
Akhilesh was rushed to the district hospital in Mau. He was declared brought dead. The lynched assailant was identified as Feroz Ahmed (23),son Niyaz Ahmed and a resident of Bahadurganj.
Feroz did not have any criminal case registered against him. His father was a history-sheeter of Kasimabad police station, said Station Officer (Kasimabad),Rahul Shukla. He added that Manoj had known Feroz. It appears that after his quarrel with Akhilesh a couple of days ago,he narrated the incident to Feroz, after which they planned the killing, said Shukla.
