On a day when BJP’s candidate for the Pilibhit Lok Sabha seat Varun Gandhi surrendered before the court in connection with his alleged hate speech, the party’s prime ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani, who addressed a rally in Maharajganj in east UP,chose not to speak on the issue. The BJP leader instead came out all guns blazing on the Congress-led UPA government.

In his 25-minute speech,Advani did not utter a single word on Varun’s arrest or the sea of BJP and Sangh supporters who had descended on Pilibhit and clashed with the police, just hours before the rally began.

Advani also chose not to hit out at UP Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati. Instead,he listed the “failures of the UPA government in tackling corruption and terrorism”.

“In the last five years of UPA rule,India has seen the worst times. We had never seen so many farmers committing suicides and the frequent terrorist attacks in the country. Till today, the UPA government has not done anything to punish the terrorists. Today,we just have one agenda, which is to develop the country and let everyone feel safe,” Advani said and urged the people to vote the NDA to power.
