Lakhimpur Kheri police on Monday arrested Mujeeb (45) for allegedly raping an eight-year-old girl,who suffered serious injuries and has been referred to Lucknow for treatment.
Doctors of King George Medical College here conducted surgery on the girl. They said her condition was stable.
Mujeeb,who contested the last Assembly poll as an independent,was produced in court which sent him to judicial custody. The police said Mujeeb was earlier arrested in 2006 for kidnapping and rape,but was acquitted by court.
Inspector Prabhat Singh of Kheri Kotwali police station said that a police team,which had gone to Lucknow along with the girl and her family,had returned after the operation was successfully conducted. The police said the accused confessed to the crime.
The girls family told the police that on Saturday, Mujeeb,who frequently visited their house,took the girl with him on his motorcycle while she was playing outside the house. Late evening,he left the girl bleeding outside the house. Next morning,when her condition deteriorated,the family took her to hospital.

Lucknow police have arrested Mohammad Shamu,26,for allegedly raping a five-year-old girl in his shop here on Monday evening. Shamu,a carpenter,is married. The alleged victim lives near the shop. Locals heard the girl screaming from inside the shop. They broke open the door and rescued her. They beat up the accused before handing him over to police.
