Angry over the murder of a man,his family and friends lynched the killer’s father and set his body on fire in Bahjoi police station area of Sambhal district late Monday night.

The mob of locals later attacked the police team when they tried to take the burnt body in custody.

Sambhal SP Tahsildar Singh said that the incident took place when heavily drunk Ghanshyam of Mohkumpur village entered into an altercation with his neighbour Vijendra.

The altercation turned violent as Ghanshyam went to his house and returned with a country-made pistol. He fired at 36-year-old Vijendra, hitting him in the chest.

While the locals rushed Vijendra to hospital, where he was declared brought dead, six of Vijendra’s brothers and their supporters attacked Ghanshyam and his father Dular Singh in retaliation, said the SP.

Ghanshyam managed to escape, but his 55-year-old father was lynched by Vijendra’s brothers and others. After he died, the group set the body on fire after sprinkling kerosene, the SP said.

The police reached the village after getting the information. As they tried to douse the flames and take the body in custody, the locals attacked the police team, throwing stones at them and forcing them to retreat. Singh said that the police team returned the village accompanied by PAC personnel and recovered the body.
