American Studies will now be a course in Lucknow University.

The varsity’s English Department is all set to launch an interdisciplinary course – both certificate and diploma – in American Studies, which will be backed by the US government and for which the American Embassy has already sanctioned funds.

While the 40-hour certificate course will include topics such as social sciences,literature,feminism/gender issues, culture and foreign among others, the 80-hour diploma course covers the same topics in detail with some additional aspects. Anyone who has passed class XII can opt for the course.

“American Studies as an interdisciplinary field incorporating elements from literature, history, economics, political science and sociology is not offered as a standalone course at any Indian university,” head of English Department,Professor Nishi Pandey said.

An important feature of the course will be the concept of collaborative teaching, where teachers well-versed with various aspects on America will take classes together,Prof Pandey informed. Methods of teaching will include maps, radio speeches, play enactment, simulation, films, books, poetry reading, etc.

“The workshop for teachers is expected to be organised in December,” Prof Pandey said, adding that the course has been approved by the Board of Studies while that from the Academic Council is yet to be taken.

Vice-Chancellor Dr S B Nimse, also the council chairman, has said that being the Chair,he can “approve the course on its behalf”.
