A day after 28-year-old Martina Gupta was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her home in Lucknow’s Eldeco colony, her father Rakesh Gupta was arrested for murder on Sunday, on the basis of a police complaint filed by his wife Malti.

According to the police, Rakesh, who had taken voluntary retirement from government services two years, has claimed that he opened fire on Martina after she refused to get married.  On Saturday, Martina was rushed to a hospital with multiple bullet wounds in her body. She was declared brought dead. Her family had initially told the police that she had committed suicide by shooting at herself with her father’s licensed pistol.

The police had suspected foul play since Martina had five bullet injuries on her body, as per the postmortem report.
Assistant Superintendent of Police, North, Anurag Vats said, “On Sunday, Malti Gupta filed a complaint with the police stating that on Saturday morning she spotted Rakesh Gupta coming out of Martina’s room located on the first floor of the building. A few minutes later, when she went to her (Martina) room, she found her lying in a pool of blood.”

“Malti stated in her complaint that she suspects Rakesh was involved in the murder of Martina. Later, police lodged an FIR against Rakesh Gupta on murder charges,” Vats added.

Martina was preparing for the civil services examination.  Station House Officer, PGI police station, Arun Kumar Rai said, “Police arrested Rakesh today from near his house and he confessed to the crime. Rakesh told police there was tension in the house for the last few days since Martina had refused a marriage proposal. Rakesh claims that on Saturday morning, he went to Martina’s room with his licensed pistol and when she again refused to get married, a heated argument took place between them. In a fit of anger, he opened fire on her.”
