The Lucknow University on Monday asked the state government to ban the ongoing strike by the employees of the university, under the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA).
Vice-Chancellor of the university AS Brar said he will not revoke the termination of V D Pandey who had forcibly occupied a staff quarter. Earlier, the authorities had demolished a house he had illegally built on the campus.
The employees are agitating for a wrong cause. I have urged the state government to invoke ESMA against the employees who are creating hurdles in the smooth functioning of university, the vice-chancellor said.
Brar said the employee had been protesting since the university administration demolished their unauthorised constructions and installed electronic metres at their residences.
The annual electricity bill of the university is over Rs 4 crore. The university is already running under a financial crisis. No one could be allowed to use power free of cost, the V-C added.
Brar said rules and regulations applied to everyone, whether a teacher,a student or a non-teaching employee. Whoever violates the rules, strict action will be taken against him. And once the action is taken,it will not be withdrawn, he said.
The university has a sent a proposal to the state for construction of 100 new staff quarters.
I have also written to the government to give the university an annual grant of Rs 50 crore to pay the salary of the staff and Rs 30 crore for the development of the university, he said.
