A week after students resorted to violence at the campus of Kanpur-based Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology and the university was closed sine die,Vice-Chancellor Dr Pradeep Kumar Sharma has resigned from his post.

Dr Sameer Pal,director (administration and monitoring),said Governor B L Joshi, who is chancellor of the university, has accepted Sharma’s resignation. Joshi has given the charge to Kanpur Divisional Commissioner Shalini Prasad.

Sharma could not be reached for comments.

On April 4,a group of students started protesting outside the V-C’s office, demanding they should be allowed to get themselves registered in the next semester despite having missed the deadline and the subsequent grace period. Even as the V-C assured to take up the matter with the academic council, the students made the V-C sit in his office till late in the night.

His official car was damaged by the students along with some other vehicles. When the V-C tried to get away in another vehicle after the police arrived, the students attacked the car and later resorted to vandalism and arson at the campus. The next day the university was closed sine die.
