An FIR has been lodged against 13 named and several unnamed students of the university on the complaint of the vice-chancellor.

Police said a group of students were protesting at the university campus on Thursday after they had missed the deadline for getting themselves registered for the next semester. They wanted the administration to allow them into the next semester. They sat outside the V-C’s office where the meeting of university’s management board was being held, staging a dharna for their demand, police said.

The students were not pacified by the assurances given by university officials, including Samir Pal,dean of students welfare,to look into the matter.

Later in the evening, the students turned violent and pelted stones at the V-C’s office and damaged his car and vehicles belonging to university officials. The V-C was not allowed to leave his office.

Sambhu Sharan Yadav,Circle Officer of Swaroop Nagar, said he and administration officials were talking to the students when the V-C tried to leave the campus in a professor’s vehicle. He said the students ran and gathered around the car. Some of the students hit the car with sticks and damaged it even as the car was escorted out of the campus by police at around 11 pm.

Later, heavy police and provincial armed constabulary were deployed on campus. Police tried to catch the students who indulged in hooliganism at the campus all night.

Pal said the university has been closed by the management sine die and all hostels on campus have been vacated. The Circle Officer said police have taken several students into custody and are trying to identify them with video footage.
