LUCKNOW: The BJP on Monday demanded that an independent commission be formed for conducting elections in the cooperative sector.

Party national secretary Santosh Gangwar said the state governments try to get their own people elected as heads of cooperative bodies by misusing the government machinery. The government should form a commission like the State Election Commission for facilitating impartial elections of cooperative societies, banks and federations,he said.

Gangwar said the state government should work to properly implement the recommendations of the Vaidyanathan committee to help the revival and streamlining of cooperative bodies in UP.

He said the state government should hold elections to cooperative bodies at the earliest, adding that the government had earlier announced elections in the months of August and September but then postponed them. He alleged that the SP government was not sure when to conduct the elections and may again postpone them.
