Engineers in the UP government never had it so bad. Since the formation of the Samajwadi Party government four months ago,as many as 75 engineers have been suspended on various charges by Shivpal Singh Yadav,Minister of PWD,Irrigation and Co-operation. Consider these:
On April 4,10 engineers,including officiating engineer-in-chief Jaipal Singh and superintendent engineer Lotu Ram,were suspended for unsatisfactory work after Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav inspected the Sharda barrage in Lakhimpur Kheri.
Later,13 engineers were suspended for delay and anomalies in allotment of work on the Bansagar irrigation project in Mirzapur and Sonbhadra districts.
On April 13,Shivpal suspended 17 engineers,including executive engineer R K Singh,for sub-standard work in the widening of the six-lane Lucknow-Kanpur-Hardoi-Sitapur road. Notices were issued to the chief engineer of central zone Krishna Kumar and superintending engineer Atar Singh. In all,25 PWD engineers have been suspended.
In the UP Rajkiya Nirman Nigam,which is the official construction agency of the UP government,18 engineers were suspended for financial anomalies in the construction of memorials during the previous Mayawati regime. They included a chief engineer.
Three engineers of the UP Project Corporation Limited,a state PSU,were suspended for anomalies in Dr Bheemrao Ambedkar Park downstream of the Gomti barrage. They included project director Kripa Shanker.
