In order to curb the incidents of acid attacks,Uttar Pradesh government has issued guidelines to business establishments,educational institutions and hospitals in the state regarding sale,stocking and use of the chemical.

“No shopkeeper can sell acid to those below 18 years of age. It has now been mandatory for buyers to submit an identity proof before purchasing acid,” Principal Secretary (Home) R M

Srivastava Monday said.

The decision has been taken as per the Supreme Court directions. Srivastava said the shopkeepers will now have to keep a track sheet and record the details of every person who buys acid from them.

He said the sellers will have to record the names,addresses of the buyers,quantity of acid bought and the purpose for buying it. He said the sellers will also have to keep a copy of every buyer’s identity proof.

As per the new regulation,the sellers will also have to keep the track of their stock of acid and provide their shop’s details including its registration number to the sub-divisional magistrates. The SDMs will be able to fix a penalty of up to Rs 50,000 and seize the stock,if the sellers fail to comply with the norms.

Srivastava said educational institutions,research laboratories,and hospitals which keep the acid for various purposes,will also have to keep a record of their stock and its utilisation.
